Port Lincoln Fishing Report – Wednesday 1st May 2024

Fishing reports have been fairly steady over the last with generally good fishing in most areas around the Eyre Peninsula. The weather is starting to turn into the winter pattern but there are still some really good autumn days with nice calm and sunny weather, perfect for a fishing trip on the water either land based or by boat. The fish that have been biting best recently are Flathead, Whiting, Salmon and Squid.

There’s plenty of fish out there and here’s what has been biting over the last week.

Elliston

The surf beaches in the area all have Salmon to some degree, size and numbers of fish vary and there’s no real stand out beach just yet. Other than Salmon some of these beaches also hold some big Tommies, Mullet and some Flathead. Sheringa and Talia are the beaches for the Flathead. Gummy Sharks and also School Sharks will also be able to be caught from the surf beaches between Elliston and Streaky Bay.

Boat fishers will also be able to catch a mixture of fish like Whiting, Garfish, Tommies, Salmon Trout, Snook and Squid from Elliston, Venus Bay, Baird Bay and Streaky Bay. Good fishing will be available at all these areas.

Coffin Bay

Generally, quite good fishing is still on show here with Whiting, Tommies, Salmon Trout, Flathead and Gummy Sharks all within the bays right now. Land based fishers are catching some good ones and getting a good mixed bag. Like wise boat fishers are catching some good mixed bags as well.

Farm Beach reports have been excellent for Whiting over the last weekend with not many fishers not catching a good feed, there is also plenty of other fish out there like Tommies, Salmon Trout, Garfish, Snook and a few Squid.

Offshore fishing has been good also, Tuna have been caught close in at Point Whidbey but have been reported to only be taking small lures, there haven’t been too many other reports of Tuna but there would still be patches out there at a few other places with Rocky Island being the best bet. Samson fish and Kingfish have still been caught around Rocky and many other reefy areas offshore are still produced some big Nannygai, Blue Morwong and the odd School Shark.

For Salmon Like last week, Gunyah to Golden Island has been the best area, it has been consistent here for the last month and hopefully it continues. Lure fishing on the calmer days has been one of the most popular ways to catch Salmon. Good casting metal lures and smaller jigs have been the best option with some of the best lures for Salmon are the Jackson Metal Effects, Cast Jigs and Nomad Ridgebacks.

Port Lincoln

Good reports again from around town, the jetties are all producing Squid with some good-sized ones that have been caught. Some of the jigs worth looking at are the Haramitsu Orange Lumo jig, the Odori King George Whiting and the Yozuri HS colour, which is alaway an all time favorite. There is also some Whiting, Tommies and Salmon Trout as well which can be caught from the jetties and also from some of the rock areas around town. We haven’t heard much about whiting from around Tulka of the rocks but there are some big Mullet and Garfish in the shallows on the big afternoon high tides.

Flathead fishers have been busy and some decent Flathead are getting caught along the North Shore and also the national park. Soft Plastics have been the best way to catch one with Jackson Bone Baits, Daiwa Bait Junkies and the Squidgy Prawns still the most popular soft plastics.

For boat fishers there’s Squid spread right out with in the bays and also Whiting which are getting bigger with not as many small fish around. Further down the coast it’s consistent fishing around Taylors and Thistle Island for Whiting and Squid with generally good-sized fish available.

Offshore fishing has been good for Nannygai, Blue Morwong and the odd School Shark. There’s not many reefy areas that don’t hold some of these fish in the Williams, Thistle and Neptune Triangle, Vexed Bottom Meat jigs account for the most of these fish caught.

For Salmon the reports are still very average from within the national park but it’s still worth a trip down there. If there are no schools visible it doesn’t mean that there is no fish, they will be there but bait fishing is then the best option.

Tumby Bay

Hopefully soon and in the months ahead we can report on the jetty fishing action and its great news that finally there’s action happening here with the jetty repairs, which is long overdue for the locals and the tourists!!! For land based fishing in the area it’s all about Flathead fishing and the beaches south of Tumby are where you should start and pick the big afternoon tides, there’s decent sized fish now getting caught.

All boat news has been from the Group with good numbers of Whiting getting caught. Some areas are good for and there’s some big Snook around too. In closer there should be Whiting, Garfish, Snook and Squid, it’s been generally good fishing there recently.

Port Neill and Arno Bay

Very much the same as last week, Squid and Whiting reports have been good in the area for boat fishers with not many other fish reported. The jetties should be good for Squid and off the beaches there should be some great Flathead fishing.

Wintery days are not far away now but plenty of time for fishing with the bigger afternoon tides a quick fish after work can be enough for dinner.
